Karen Gaylord

Karen Gaylord’s first day as a professional Realtor® in Maryland was on September 11, 2001. She rose above those trying times to become a top producer in her area, consistently ranking among the top 5 percent of REALTORS® in the nation. Long & Foster Realtors, a regional firm, awards include No. 1 Agent in Harford County in both 2011 and 2012 and No. 3 in Baltimore Metro Region in 2011. She was also on the Board of Harford County Association of Realtors and the Million Dollar Real Estate Association of Harford County. Today, Karen works from Garceau Realty in Bel Air.

Working at Merrill Lynch as a vice president for eight years in New Jersey, she got her real estate license in the mid-1980s as part of her financial work. "I spoke with clients about other types of assets and in some cases purchased tangible assets of real estate to anchor a portfolio," Karen says. It wasn’t until moving to Baltimore that she considered real estate as a career, and that was after staying at home with her two now-grown children for six years.

The individual residential resale market is Karen’s forte with her average sales price higher than most area agents. Karen explains: "I tend to attract corporate executives with my background. I look at a home not only as a home, but also as possibly the largest asset in their investment portfolio. Most of my home sales range from $400,000 to $500,000, but the average county sales price is about $250,000. I do everything, but my niche is in the higher end."

Karen’s mission plan: "To have a quality, successful, referral-based real estate practice." Thinking big, Karen sets and tracks the results of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. "To have people think of me, there is a lot that goes into it," Karen says. "It takes customer service, communication, honesty, feedback."

To attain her goals, Karen elicits the help of a top agent that she calls every morning. They express gratitude, affirmations and discuss goals to keep them both on track and accountable. "This helps me take my blinders off about who I am, who I think I am, what I say I will do and what I actually do," she declares.

After working as buyer’s agent as part of a successful team for about five years, her own business is evolving. After initially going it alone, last year she brought on two female buyer’s

agents who also do listings. "They can contribute more if they see the whole picture," believes Karen.

Karen started counseling and gathering resources to help individuals facing short sales and foreclosures in a private, low-key way when the market tanked several years ago. "Word got out and under the radar people started calling me," she says. Her free counseling work was nominated and chosen as a finalist for an Athena Award in 2010. Karen describes the experience, "Out of a few hundred applications, nine finalists were chosen. Although I didn’t win, sitting at that podium with those exceptional women was so humbling."

From finding paradigm shifts in the current market to lightly staging homes, Karen sees real estate differently. She follows economists to study the markets on local, regional and global levels. Clients like her down-to-earth, fun approach and appreciate getting both a REALTOR® and a financial expert. "All has come together for me," Karen feels. "I found my place in the sun."
